Joel Reappears

Not really. This is Erin on behalf of Joel. When the thesis calls, the blog is quiet. Sad. Here's my attempt at channeling Joel...enjoy.

Hey everybody! Sorry it's been so long since I've written on this thing. I've been really busy with this stupid thesis, some days I just want to quit. Wait, I'm on a new "let's be positive about bad things" kick. Starting over.

Hey everybody! Sorry it's been so long since I've written on this thing. My thesis is so much fun, and I'm learning so much every minute of the 18-hour days I'm putting in, that I don't even think about blogging! Or anything else...like food, sleep, fun, or sports. In fact, I'm kind of sad that the Broncos game is on in 52 minutes and some of my focus will get diverted to less exciting events, like Sunday football.

Back to the topic of the blog. It's a sunny day and I was just sitting here, happily editing page 831 of my thesis that is really long enough to be a dissertation but my advisor doesn't care...oops, slipped up there...as I was saying, I was just thinking about the sun. Isn't it an amazing thing? It's always there, trying to brighten our day, and sometimes those clouds get in the way, but does the sun give up? No way, dudes, no way. It sticks it out, waiting for those pesky clouds to dissipate, ready to make us happy once again. I love that golden sun. Ah, life is good.

Well, better get back to my other computer...the big one with charts and graphs and tables and pages and pages (and pages!) of long scientific words that no one understands except me. I dread the day I don't get to be intellectually challenged by this thing. I guess I'll just try to make it last as long as I can.

Miss you all! Love, Joel

P.S. Erin is the coolest girl ever. She takes really good care of me and has already started buying Christmas presents for me and all my family. Gosh golly, she's swell. I'm a lucky guy!

Wow, Joel, that was a very positive blog. I'm so glad that you are having so much fun working on your thesis. Like "you" said, the sun is always there--butit's not like you will have a wonderful experience like this ever again in your life. Enjoy every minute of those fun 18 hour days!!!

Love,
Susan

ps You are really lucky to have a great girl like Erin! We can't wait to meet her.

Joel - nice to see your new blog! 831 pages? I have just announced that from the computer and you have several Wows! from Rhett and the kids. I wish we could understand that! I know you're going to get through this and it will get finished and probably get published, whereupon you will go to conferences all over the world and give speeches, and then you will start teaching .... okay, I'm getting ahead of myself. That's pretty serious if you have to miss the Bronco game. We are glad Erin is coming up at Christmas! No presents are necessary - her presence will be present enough. But we'll be ready to play some games! She's a real lady, and I'm glad she's taking care of you.
Hang in!

Erin told me to tell you that she wants nothing to do with you for Christmas. She's just getting gifts to get on your good sides. She is actually going to her home for Christmas

Just kidding, she does want to see everyone but she doesn't get back to visit her family very often so she is still trying to figure out her plans. So am I for that matter, though I will for sure get down there for some portion of the Christmas break.

That was pretty good, very Joel-esque. Right up to the part where you said golly gosh...but that was at the very end...so good job. I would say you are funny but then that creates an awkward silence...yup. I am guessing that the Broncos weren't on tv, that would be the only reason he wouldn't watch the game.

Glad to hear from Erin and that she is SO good to you Joel.
That thesis, sounds like a killer. It has to end sometime, right?
Sure hope you will both be able to make it for most of christmas. We need you both for some good times. Thanks for updating us on Joel's life Erin. What are you up to?

I feel the need to respond to the question of what I'm up to, which also calls into question the status of me as a "lady" (though I appreciate the vote of confidence, Melecia). I am also glued to a computer screen these days, between work and school. Tonight, in fact, I'm writing a paper on Joel's laptop while he's writing next to me on his desktop. (i know, you're all blown away by my use of technological lingo).

Anyway, as Blythe can attest to, I've been having some digestion issues related to some homemade nachos consumed during football this afternoon (ask her about today's phone call). So I'm sitting here, typing (in a very lady-like fashion), when said biological necessity manifested itself. Joel found this very amusing, as you can imagine, as did I. A minute later, I thought it was safe to take a drink of my coffee when, mid-gulp, I looked over to see Joel still in mild hysterics, and with his shirt covering his nose (still...mmmm, beans...). It was funny, and before I knew it, I had covered all of the immediate surroundings with a nice, tan spray...whale style (you know, with their blow holes 'n all). Both of our computer screens, the desk, the wall, keyboards, the whole thing.

Phew, that was funny.
Back to work.

Footnote: I could really use an etiquette book for my birthday, which happens to be in 13 days.

Afterword: Who uses footnotes on blog posts? Or afterwords. Dating Joel has really increased my nerd factor! And my ability to procrastinate online (shh, don't tell him I said that).

Luckily I was only partially fooled that it wasn’t Joel speaking. I could have ended up releasing a slurry of derogatory lab rat comments on an unintended recipient.

OK…. I thought my thesis was longwinded, I don’t think half of my committee even did more than thumb through the pictures, graphs and captions. Granted they went through my models, calculations and drawings with a fine tooth comb, but the paper was too long or something. I was nowhere near a million pages or whatever you have going now.

Hopefully it all works out well and that you both don’t have reoccurring nightmares when this is all over.

funny story - I can see that tan spray all over the place! I don't think I'm a lady either, Erin - I have a lot of the "guy" in me - like when I vacuum & wash our van every other week, go to jiffy lube every 3000 miles, hate to talk on the phone, etc. So you'll be in New York for Chrismas? Dang! I guess the family will meet you another time. So since it's been a while since I have added, is your birthday on Nov. 26th? Do you really want an etiquette book? I've learned a lot from being a military spouse - some of it's useful - some is silly! You and Joel sound like dueling computer nerds. Have a great day!

Hey, Joel - - -I'm SOOOO glad all my little positive stories, parables and quotes are finally paying off! Haven't heard you sound that upbeat for months! :) (Thanks, Erin - - -although there is still the "darrkkkk" undertone!) :) Thanks for the clue about the birthday. Erin. Number 21, right? Maybe Joel can make you a birthday cake in his spare time. Wish we were going to celebrate it with you, but we'll catch you before or after or? But no nachos, please! Take good care!

I'm glad to hear that there is still life in Bozeman. Erin, I totally know what it's like to let one around Joel. The first time it happened to me he laughed so hard that I literally crawled into the closet and shut the door. I had only known him for about 1 month. Joel (funny guy) is not good to be around when you have eaten too many raw veggies (flatulenc creaters). He has a way of making me laugh so hard I just can't hold out any longer.
