Popcorn Schizophrenia

I just stopped by CVS to get some popcorn for the final four and watching a DVD.  There were two brands (Act II and Orville Redenbacher's in case you are curious) and two types for each brand:  Butter Lovers and Diet.  So you either love butter so much that you want to marry it or you want popcorn that makes you remember what butter tasted like before you stopped eating.  I've got to believe there is some commentary on Americans here.  It's like we either over-indulge or deprive ourselves.  Or indulge and then repent (by buying fat free popcorn, I guess).  What ever happened to moderation?

So most of you are probably thinking at this point that anyone who spends this much thought on popcorn needs a hobby, or a therapist.  But I think there's something in this. . .

This is your therapist father writing: Popcorn is great with a good movie. Red hots with popcorn goes well with 24 and American Idol. What's life without sweets? We are still eating Halloween candy. Enjoy life.

Never have tried red hots with popcorn, sounds good though. I see things like butter lover's popcorn and my mind spins around it. I think things like this everyday, but this one seemed funny enough to share.

How very true my dear friend! I think your onto something here as well. I think when we really need to start worrying is when they develop deep fried and buttered popcorn. Lets face it, our country is fat and thats the way we like it. So pass the butter for my butter please.

Have you tried red hots with reeses pieces? its pretty good. When it comes to popcorn, Joni says go for the glory and get what you like the best. Or if you absolutley feel too guilty and have to go with the fat free kind (which I do) buy some popcorn seasonings to add with it and it makes it all better.

I think popcorn is one of those American traditions that you shouldn't have to feel guilty for, hence the butter lovers version. But for weirdos like me they make the "healthier" stuff, and I addd a little garlic and other stuff to create to my liking. It is pretty weird though, it really won't make that big of a difference unless you eat it all the time.

Wow Paul, garlic? I didn't know you were such a popcorn aficionado. I do agree that with some things (like watching a movie once a week you should just go for it. What got me is that there wasn't even a choice for "normal" butter. Ryan, I'll bet Paul had deep-fried buttered popcorn in Texas. By the way, I went with the butter lovers popcorn last night to follow my big mac supersized meal. It was a glorious fat-fest.

You're a bit nutsy, my son! But I have to agree that all the "special" kinds of popcorn are totally superfluous. It's POPCORN, for heaven's sake! Just eat it and enjoy it, regular style; it's pretty darn good with just a little salt; add a bit of your own butter if you don't mind greasy fingers. And "clean your palette" afterward with a cinnamon bear or a York's peppermint patty! :)

Love you,
Mom

Kendi uses some pretty strange seasoning for her popcorn. I was reading the label last night as we were eating a bowl of popcorn together - it's typically used as seasoning for steak, chicken or seafood... but she likes it on her popcorn! Go figure.

I think you're 100% right Joel. Look at all the fad / on again, off again diets. People will gorge themselves with bad food and then go on some crazy, beat yourself up diet. It's unsustainable, so before long it's back to eating crappy. Then you get disappointed and feel fat, and decide it's time to punish yourself again.

My pet peeve about popcorn is buying the bags and the popcorn setting leaves half popped and half seeds, and when you try to pop the whole thing, it burns up. My favorite that pops the whole bag (I've tried them all)is Pop Secret - Butter!
I love kettle corn too. Dieting doesn't work. I think the trick is not eating after dinner.

Especially if you eat dinner at 4PM! OK, maybe that's not a good idea.

Funny blog.
Glen, the seasoning is Johnny's seasoning salt. Good stuff but I am sure the sodium in it isn't so great! Good thing I don't eat popcorn all that often.

Wow, there are a lot of opinions about popcorn! It's one of my favorite treats. At the movies, we have them put butter in the middle and then on the top. I always weigh a pound more the morning after we go to a movie!!! I have both Orville's Healthy Popcorn and his Movie Theatre Butter here at home and we all prefer the movie theatre butter. Sometimes I pop one of each and mix them up--it just seems to make sense to me!! The hot tamales are great either mixed in or on the side and has anyone ever thrown in a box of Milk Duds? It's like eating chocolate caramel popcorn--pretty indulging!!

As for the whole bag not popping on the popcorn setting, we stand by the microwave and when it gets to 0,immediately hit the add 30 seconds button and listen for the popping to slow down and then turn it off. It burns when we let it go the full 30 seconds or if it stops after the popcorn setting ends and we start it up again after a pause. Does that make sense! I love that Kettle Korn too!! Popcorn...yummm!
