Extravaganza revisited
We went back up to the same job site near Big Sky today and saw three bears (no days). My coworker was able to get a bunch of pictures of a little bear cub that I think has been abandoned. It looked like it was doing OK; it was eating and looked healthy enough but I don't know how screwed up it is for bear cubs to grow up without parents. Maybe it will make it, though it will probably need counseling later in life. That's all for now. . .small blogs are less intimidating for me to create.

That lil bear is adorable. I still wish you'd brought him/her home with you. Kaya would have adjusted.
Seriously that is so cool. I know Glen talked to you the other night about what you actually do but Glen and I don't talk so I'll have to call you and have you tell me. Just kidding really we talk, but usually it's at about 11 when I am crawling into bed late and it's just the basics.
Do you guys carry mace or anything to protect yourselves? I know my parents do a lot of hiking up in Glacier and they take mace with them for proctection. Might be a good idea. That seems pretty close.
That bear pepper spray is pretty potent stuff. I remember when Kendi's dad bought some - it was like a billion times more powerful than mace.
We do have bear spray and I should carry it around. I usually feel pretty comfortable with other people but go around armed alone.
That bear looks like it's pulling a Buffy on my front lawn.

Joel. You are really in your element. I hope you don't get too comfortable being close to bears. Don't forget my grandpa's story about being trapped in a cave by a bear while he was on a fishing trip. The only way he could get out of the cave was to reach down the bear's throat, grab him by the tail, turn him inside out, so he would run all the way back home backwards! Love, Dad
Neat photo, Joel. I'm happy the work is going well. You know I'll worry about the cub - - even though it won't help to do so! I've read that often a cub will be killed by other adult bears, so I'm hoping it survives. Nice of you to be concerned about his emotional well-being - -although I doubt that is is main worry. :)
You are right mom, I guess I was in denial. He/She was doing pretty good to this point and was getting on in size.
