Plummer Retires

This is kind of old news. But I wasn't around the news this weekend to hear about it and have thought a lot about the situation today. I first read about it in the Rocky Mountain News: "Lincicome: Plummer picked weak way out". Just like many in the Denver media sharkpit to spit on a guy on the way out. From what I've heard, Jake lives a low profile life. He drives a Honda Element not a Cadillac Escalade and doesn't generally spend much money. I think if I had the ability to quietly step away from something that maybe became not fun anymore and try other things I would be all over it. A big part of me wanted him to go to another team as a starter and show everyone that he's actually very good, but congrats to him for not being afraid of making what appears to be the right life decision for him. I'll miss watching "The Snake" make ridiculous bootleg throws and running over pass defenses who didn't respect his legs. He did Boise proud.

lol, Ryan cracks me up sometimes. Joel, you should read si.com. Peter King and Don Banks have said some really awesome things about Plummer, I have read a ton of stuff recently that is positive and a lot of denver area writers are coming out in PLummer's defense, and even Brian Griese's, saying how good of people they really were but for some reason the media blew thier little "mishaps" out of proportion. I think a lot of people respect him more now than they ever did before unfortunately...and for some reason I wouldn't count him out of playing for the Texans or even the Raiders. I agree he is the type of guy that really would walk away from it all and not care though.

I read a rumor after I wrote this last night that he and his girlfriend are considering a tour in the Peace Corps! I think that would be completely awesome, how many multimillionares would set it all aside to do something like that!
Thanks for your support, Ryan. I'm taking things day by day. I'll heal but now is the time to greive. Smart a**

Everything I've read about him around here has been pretty positive, but then that could just be the local flavor of the newspaper.

Be strong Jub.

Well, Joel, you knew you'd hear from me on this one! :)

I listened to EPSN radio going and coming to Boise, and the ONLY negative things I heard were quotes from Denver writers - - -stuff, like "Why didn't he cry and at least act sad for his fans? Elway did." What?????

First, he suffered from being compared to Elway from day 1, and they even ding him for not retiring the same way when the circumstances were completely different? Second, he was never embraced the way Elway was. Third, and on this one you may disagree, but I still think he became the scapegoat for some bad recruiting and coaching decisions.

Someone yesterday said they felt Jake was better than Matt Linart; they said, "Give Jake the team Matt Linart had, and the coach, and 15 seconds in the pocket so he could find Reggie Bush, and Jake would have been the Heisman winner." Maybe and maybe not, but anyway. . . Yesterday I looked up his foundation - - -the work he's doing for abused children, for Alzheimer's and several other very worthy causes. Hooray for Jake for following his dreams and being more than just an athlete. I hope if he DOES come back, the Snake gets a fairer shake!

I think you make really good points, mom. I think that successful quarterbacks often have the loyalty of a coach and owners who are committed to building an offense around the talent that exists. I've said it a number of times but I think old shanny shifted his gears on Plummer and ended up being an obstacal instead of a proponent to him succeeding. I mean, Plummer went to the probowl in 2005 with the help of Shanahan's coaching (or was it Kubiaks?). I think he would have to have that feeling again to come back from retirement, if that is his choice. Houston made a lot of sense because he would have gotten that from Kubiak.

I would have liked to see him play with another team. He had a couple more good years left, but I respect his decision. He doesn't owe anything to anyone. If he doesn't want to play football anymore and is out of his contactual obligations... go and do what you enjoy doing.

Plummer is a decent human being. I've heard a lot of positive things from people that interact with him. Some people like the attention of the lime light, but I don't think Plummer does. I can understand why someone wouldn't always want to be under the scutiny of fans, media, etc.

It depends on which paper you read to get the story straight. Which one is straight? Our local paper has been very positive about Plummer. I was talking to two friends today that thought he still might play for another team. His contract in Denver is not finished and he stands to make several million more without playing. It is always good to see a player do altruistic things. I did some counseling with a former Bronco who was miserable because his biggest concern was having his own money making business and it failed. Dad
